My Obesity Memoir
Apr 24, 2008
I have ALWAYS been heavier throughout my chldhood. I was taller so people never guessed my weight. GOOD THING! LOL I have tried several diets which I never succeeded with. Like others I have read on the site, l would lose some weight but then gain back what I had lost + some. I had read about the lap band procedure for approximately 3-4 years before I made the final decision this is in my best interest! Not only for health purposes but for my children's sake. I felt guilty not being as active with my young children as I should have been.
I went to the consultation with my husband as he had no knowledge of the procedure. After the diagrams of both surgeries he was quite concerned with the gastric which I shared I was for the band. When Dr. Schram said "this is a tool to help you" those words were magic to my ears. I knew this would help me to achieve permanent weight loss. I was quite anxious to start down the path to surgery. Growing impatient but I thought no news is good news in Feb. 2008 I got a call to come in for the pre-op appt. and in scheduling that date the nurse said your surgery is scheduled for 02/27/2008. I replied oh Thank You, Thank You! I was elated to finally have a date yet nervous on the other hand hoping I passed all the testing. I had previously passed the psych eval and all tests were passed. I finally had the green light to go forth with surgery!!! I grew quite nervous in my final week but was given plenty of assurance I would be fine.
I arrived for surgery in MI on 02/27/2008 and all went well. I did feel somewhat dizzy going for x-rays after surgery. I did rest and was released from the hospital approx. 5:45 which then meant I had about 4.5 hrs. to get home. I was encouraged to stop approx. every hr. to walk some which I did. The ride home was quite foggy as I was medicated for the pain. The following week I was off work and concentrated solely on me. I remember being discharged my orders were "light walking." I did just that. EVERY day on the treadmill!! I instantly started seeing the weight fall off. I was so tickled to finally see a scale go down vs. up!
I had my 3 week check up and did amazing! They were surprised I had started the treadmill the day after my surgery. I had also followed the Dr's. orders closely pertaining to my diet. I had my first fill on April 14, 2008 (3 cc's). At that time I had lost a total of 26.5 lbs. I am so impressed with the progress I have made. Personally I would recommend the band for any person who has struggled with weight throughout their life. There were times I shared with my family I am just hopeless. And in my heart I believed it. My husband has said since your band was not restricted within that first 6 weeks could you have not done this on your own. Absolutely NOT I said. Never on my own could I have lost this much weight this fast. The band has given me life again.
My journey is just beginning with the band but as a newbie it is lifesaving! I find this site so encouraging and have read comments I have said to myself such as taking clothes off as soon as getting home for the pj's and for wearing jeans comfy for hrs. Mine are loosening daily!
