I am Rita's big brother. I knew that Rita had WLS done, but was not fully educated in her actual procedure. All I know is that when I saw her three years ago after a decade, I was absolutely blown away by how great she looked. I was at my peak weight at that time at 319 lbs. I am convinced that some of this is genetic in nature. After my vertical gastric sleeve procedure done in July 2008, I have now lost 105 lbs. and never felt better. I still have 15 lbs. to go to get to my goal weight, but Rita's story has been an inspiration for me. I'm so proud of her and even though the miles between us are many (she in Northern Vermont and I in Southern California), we have a common bond with WLS and the health benefits that it provides.

Rita, WOW! Thank you SOOOO much for what you wrote about "what is enough" and how it is not the scale but about taking care and nurishing one's self! I had chills reading this as it really hit home! May I ask you, did you have the proximal RNY? I started out at 367 and have about 230 lbs to lose (although I will be so happy if I can get under 200 lbs so this is my real goal). I had 5 feet (150 cm) of small intestine bypassed and am hoping this is enough to help me lose all the weight I need to plus maintain it. Many many thanks again! You are a true inspiration!

Rita - Congrats! You know each day - I never know where my inspiration will come from think today you are it. I am 12 days post-op and dealing w/food demons each hour. Good to hear that there is someone out there w/8 years under their belt who has been successful. I know I will make it too.
