Colleen- take heart and relax. I am a nurse with over 17 years experience so let me tell you a bit about "your spleen and you". LOL The spleen is an organ that does only 2 things- makes and stores red blood cells. If a person injures their spleen, say in a car accident or something, it is removed because it bleeds profusely and causes severe anemia. When someone with a healthy spleen has it removed during abdominal surgery, it is generally, though not always, because it was nicked during the course of the surgery. This is a common complication when doing gastric abdominal surgery on the obese, because it is a small organ and can't always be readily seen. It IS, however, one of those, like our appendix and our gallbladder, that we can happily and healthily live without. The vast majority of your red blood cells are produced by your bone marrow and this will not change. You may experience some minor anemia at first, but once the marrow starts to make up the difference (and it will) you will be fine. The new aches and pains are most likely due to muscle stretching/straining from your time on the cold and hard surgery table, this too, shall pass. Finally, you are only 6 days post -op, I PROMISE you will stop regretting your decision when the weight starts coming off and you feel better. I am still pre-op but have taken care of so many surgery patients of all sorts in my carreer, that I feel I can say that with absolute certainty. I promise- you will feel better! Do everything your doctor says, and above all- make yourself move- even though it hurts like a big dog. The more you move the easier it gets and the better you will feel. If you give in to the urge to sit still, you WILL hurt for a LOT longer and set yourself up for a higher risk of blood clots in your legs. Take heart- you will be better soon! Bright Blessings-
