Colleen, my dearest lit'l angelet, I know things look grim but take it from me it will get better. I two felt like you do and thought it would never end, I even posted this on my profile. I thought I had made a mistake by doing this surgery but only to find out that in time I am happy I did. You went through a major change in your life, your body needs time to heal along with the physical change there is mental as well. Please give yourself time and try to relax, take it day by day and remember we are all here for you. hugs you angel Deanna

Colleen- take heart and relax. I am a nurse with over 17 years experience so let me tell you a bit about "your spleen and you". LOL The spleen is an organ that does only 2 things- makes and stores red blood cells. If a person injures their spleen, say in a car accident or something, it is removed because it bleeds profusely and causes severe anemia. When someone with a healthy spleen has it removed during abdominal surgery, it is generally, though not always, because it was nicked during the course of the surgery. This is a common complication when doing gastric abdominal surgery on the obese, because it is a small organ and can't always be readily seen. It IS, however, one of those, like our appendix and our gallbladder, that we can happily and healthily live without. The vast majority of your red blood cells are produced by your bone marrow and this will not change. You may experience some minor anemia at first, but once the marrow starts to make up the difference (and it will) you will be fine. The new aches and pains are most likely due to muscle stretching/straining from your time on the cold and hard surgery table, this too, shall pass. Finally, you are only 6 days post -op, I PROMISE you will stop regretting your decision when the weight starts coming off and you feel better. I am still pre-op but have taken care of so many surgery patients of all sorts in my carreer, that I feel I can say that with absolute certainty. I promise- you will feel better! Do everything your doctor says, and above all- make yourself move- even though it hurts like a big dog. The more you move the easier it gets and the better you will feel. If you give in to the urge to sit still, you WILL hurt for a LOT longer and set yourself up for a higher risk of blood clots in your legs. Take heart- you will be better soon! Bright Blessings- Mickeyºoº

Colleen, I'm sorry that you have experienced complications and had to have your spleen removed. I don't know the specifics of your situation, but I was told by my surgeon that it is one of the more common risks of this surgery. From what I've read, a small nic in the spleen can cause alot of bleeding and I guess that is the reason for its removal. It is a scary situation because I believe the spleen aids in preventing pneumonia and other illnesses. I wish you a quick recovery and a bright future. God bless you.

Sweetie, I'm surprised that your doctor didn't mention the possibility of spleen removal with you prior to surgery. Generally, it helps with excessive bleeding! Don't sue your doctor -- he was saving your life, dear! You just need to be up on your vaccinations before flu season, etc! You weren't planning on visiting Central America or Africa anytime soon anyway, were you? Not to worry, then! :D Relax and heal! Maria
